Background of the Study
Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide, and its prevalence in Nigeria is steadily rising (Okoro et al., 2024). The World Health Organization (WHO) and other health bodies have developed guidelines for preventing stroke, which include measures such as managing hypertension, controlling diabetes, promoting physical activity, and reducing smoking and alcohol consumption (Ogunjimi et al., 2023). Nurses, as frontline healthcare providers, are crucial in the implementation of these guidelines, as they are often the first to assess patients, provide counseling, and promote prevention strategies. However, the level of nurses' knowledge and their ability to effectively implement stroke prevention guidelines varies (Ojo et al., 2024).
Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) is one of the leading healthcare institutions in Nigeria, where nurses play an important role in the care of stroke patients and the prevention of stroke. This study aims to assess nurses’ knowledge of stroke prevention guidelines at LUTH and investigate how well these guidelines are implemented in clinical practice. The findings will contribute to improving stroke prevention efforts and inform training programs for nurses.
Statement of the Problem
While stroke prevention guidelines have been developed globally, the level of knowledge among nurses and the extent to which these guidelines are implemented in clinical settings, particularly in Nigeria, remain unclear. In LUTH, nurses may encounter barriers to applying these guidelines effectively, which could lead to missed opportunities for stroke prevention. This study aims to explore these issues and provide insights into how nurses can better contribute to stroke prevention.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess nurses’ knowledge of stroke prevention guidelines at Lagos University Teaching Hospital.
2. To evaluate the implementation of stroke prevention guidelines in clinical practice by nurses at LUTH.
3. To identify barriers to the implementation of stroke prevention guidelines by nurses at LUTH.
Research Questions
1. What is the level of nurses’ knowledge of stroke prevention guidelines at LUTH?
2. How effectively do nurses implement stroke prevention guidelines in clinical practice at LUTH?
3. What barriers do nurses face in implementing stroke prevention guidelines at LUTH?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses at LUTH do not possess adequate knowledge of stroke prevention guidelines.
2. There is no significant difference between nurses’ knowledge and the actual implementation of stroke prevention guidelines at LUTH.
3. Barriers to implementation do not significantly hinder the effective application of stroke prevention guidelines by nurses at LUTH.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on nurses at Lagos University Teaching Hospital and examine their knowledge and implementation of stroke prevention guidelines. Limitations may include potential biases in self-reported data, as well as the influence of workload and resources on the implementation of guidelines.
